The Groove Kitties is a high-energy San Diego based band that combines elements of rock, funk, folk, techno, world and pop music together in an auditory version of what can only be termed “ear candy.”
Cathryn, before we talk about your exciting new band, tell us a bit about what’s new with you. I have to tell you that your site “Listen Local San Diego” is wonderful. If anyone wants to know what’s happening in San Diego music, that is the site to visit.
Besides all the cool weekly shows we have going on, we’re doing a quarterly festival called All Access at HOB, and The Lloyd Pest Control artist of the month promo will start up again this summer. Listen Local is looking forward to working with a bunch of new venues this year, and perhaps an outdoor festival…. lots of fun in the works.
What is coming up with the San Diego Music scene?
As per usual, a lot of talented musicians are leaving their chilly homes, heading to sunny SD and sharing their music. Our scene is ever evolving, its awesome.
Now here is the real news, tell us about your new band The Grove Kitties?
The Groove Kitties is an all girl band featuring Marcia Claire on bass and vocals, Garrison Bailey on drums and vocals, myself on guitar and vocals, Becky Fleming on sax/flute/vocals, Nancy Bee on guitar and we’ve just added a new Kitty, Sara, who plays keys, cello and sings. We play a mixture of covers and originals, nothings off limits. Our next big gig is at Indie Fest in March.
How a Band gets put together is always interesting how did The Grove Kitties come together?
Nancy and I played in a band 10 years ago called Joans. We had lost touch and then randomly reconnected and talked about getting the band back together I called Marcia who had just met an amazing chick drummer, we gave Becky a call and it was all set. We had a banner, a website, and two gigs before we’d ever even all met each other.
It’s a collaboration, we all write and we’re in the process of combining some of our older songs, and writing new ones.
You must have a ‘mission statement’ – is something we hear all the time. If your band had one, what would it be?
Oh man, It’d be better to let Marcia post our mission statement, she has a way with words.
Great musicianship, wonderful vocals – where is The Grove Kitties going from here?
We’d like to do it all. Play house concerts unplugged, rock faces off electric, do the top 40 corporate thing, and have people singing our original songs for… Wait… maybe THAT’S our mission statement.
How is your material chosen?
Each kitty gets to pick a song every rehearsal or so… whatever floats that kitties boat.
Is there or will there be a CD available?
Were planning on recording with Berkley Sound sometime this summer, and release by the end of the year, or early 2012.
You are certainly one of our favorite people tell us where we can see the band play and any links about yourself and the band.
Our next show is Feb. 12th at Winstons in OB and then Indie Fest on March 12th. You can check us out at:
See you at The Game!
Thank you Cathryn for the update.
