Gotta Have A Video?
The main reason that any artist or band is successful is their ability to connect with their fans. What videos do is allow your fans to re-experience you as an artist, as well as introduce you to new fans. Videos are wonderful promotional tools that allow fans to share with another potential fans, and that puts more people in your audience, and if that video is linked to your site, you could sell more music. Videos increase your presence and keep you in the minds of your fans. The viewer gets more engaged with the you, the artist or band, and it creates a connection often times more personal and intense than watching a live performance.
Note: Most music is discovered by fans on YouTube.
So, what kind of video should you do?
We’ll answer that this way – How do you want to be seen? Like everything in the entertainment business it is all about image.
- If you want to appear as the artful singer/songwriter, then a simple video of you playing your songs will work just fine.
- If your group is wonderful live then shooting the band in performance is a great idea.
Note: It must have good audio!
- If you want to be seen as an artist with a particular bent, or you want the song/lyric represented in the video production then a bit more work needs to go into the production and staging.
- If you see yourself as a personality, one you have developed by gesture, style, and music, on stage and you want that shown, then that requires in essence a four minute movie with all the production values a film would require.
There is no doubt that each of these approaches have value. The thing to remember is to be honest with yourself as to whether you are ready do a video, each type still requires excellence in performance. If you present a poor video too soon in your career it will haunt you and stay fixed in the virtual cloud. Any media has the ability to have you appear larger than life – that includes flaws and shortcomings as well. You need a video, but take even the simple video very seriously.
